چکیده

We demonstrated integrated technology for multiple crew and robots to work together in a planetary surface exploration scenario. Highlights include dynamic replanning, “many to many” rover commanding, efficient human-system interaction and workflows, single cycle instrument placement, and data management.

Assessment of robotic recon for human exploration of the Moon

Robotic reconnaissance (‘‘recon’’) has the potential to significantly improve scientific and technical return from lunar surface exploration. In particular, robotic recon can be used to improve traverse planning, reduce operational risk, and increase crew productivity. To study how robotic recon can benefit human exploration, we recently conducted a field experiment at Black Point Lava Flow (BP...

Robotic Recon for Human Exploration

Introduction Robotic reconnaissance has the potential to significantly improve scientific and technical return from lunar surface exp loration. In particular, robotic recon may increase crew productivity and reduce operational risk for exploration. However, additional research, development and field-testing is needed to mature robot and ground control systems, refine operational protocols, and ...

HERRO Mission to Mars Using Telerobotic Surface Exploration from Orbit

In a previous paper, we outlined a strategy for human exploration that combines elements of both human spaceflight and robotic exploration in a cost-effective strategy for exploration that could be adapted to multiple targets in the solar system [1, 2]. This Human Exploration using Real-time Robotic Operations (HERRO) [1] approach differs from the traditional view of human exploration, in that ...

Robotic Assistance, Mobility & Vision Systems – Enabling Technology for Early Human-robotic Lunar Exploration

In the 21 st Century, space exploration will focus on surface exploration, with human-robotic collaboration allowing extended-duration stays at challenging lunar and planetary sites. This paper focuses on three early phases of lunar exploration: (i) in-situ characterisation and site survey for science, prospecting and reconnaissance in advance of human sorties (ii) in-situ human sortie field as...

Technology and Field Demonstration of Robotic Search for Antarctic Meteorites

Meteorites are the only significant source of material from other planets and asteroids, and therefore are of immense scientific value. Antarctica’s frozen and pristine environment has proven to be the best place on earth to harvest meteorite specimens. The lack of melting and surface erosion keep meteorite falls visible on the ice surface in pristine condition for thousands of years. In this a...
